Viewing these videos on a large screen still won’t make for the best viewing experience but on a small screen they look great. You can further boost the quality of your videos by using Active HDR mode, allowing you to shoot moving HDR video. When reframed the Insta360 X3 video looks pretty decent, even if the resolution is the same. The more premium Insta360 One RS 1-Inch 360 Edition can shoot 6K 360 video, but then again it’s much larger, thicker and can’t really be used as a proper action camera. Insta360 want’s to make this camera accessible to the masses anything much higher than 5.7K would be difficult more most people’s phones/laptops to edit smoothly. The lack of a boost in resolution is somewhat disappointing but also somewhat understandable. The maximum video resolution of the Insta360 One X3 is still 5.7K, which is unchanged from the last version.

The larger sensors are definitely the biggest hardware upgrade for the X3 and shouldn’t be underestimated. Even in perfect lighting conditions the larger sensors do results in higher quality 360 video than we have seen in a 360 camera of this size and price.

Shooting with the X3 in indoors, low light or darker locations results in more dynamic video with less noise than was possible before. Having tested the X3 for the past few weeks I do notice an uptick in quality, particularly in low light conditions. The size and quality of a cameras sensor is usually the biggest factor in how well it can shoot videos and photos. These larger sensors allow the camera to capture more light, detail and colour. Each of the Insta360 X3’s two lenses feature a 1/2″ sensor, which is twice the size of the last generation and larger than those found is nearly all action cameras, 360 or not. The Insta360 X3 is primarily a 360 action camera and the previous version is probably the most popular 360 camera ever so what can the X3 do to surpass it?įirst and foremost the new sensors.

The added size is barely noticeable and this is certainly a 360 camera designed for all environments. The X3 feels like a premium product and additions like the large touch screen and vibration are welcome additions. There were some issues with the last version of the camera with it being difficult to keep the camera watertight, but from what I can see this is easier to achieve with the X3. Two obvious vulnerabilities are the two protruding lenses which are easily damaged should you drop the camera – be warned.Īccording to Insta360 the X3 is waterproof without a case to 10m, however you need to make sure all the doors are securely closed before hand. The camera is designed to be fairly rigged with a hardened plastic body and textured rubber sides for secure gripping. The X3 is slightly bigger and heavier than its predecessor, however it’s still small and light enough to fit into the action camera category and will be compatible with most action camera accessories. On the front there is both a shutter button and another for viewing your media. On the other side you’ll find the power button and quick menu key for selecting predefined settings. One one side of the camera you’ll fine the doors holding the battery, MicroSD card slot & USB port. The X3 features a 2.29″ touch screen, by far the largest of any of the Insta360 cameras allowing the user to much more easily control the camera settings. Turn the camera around and the difference becomes more clear. From one side the X3 looks pretty much the same as the previous generation, the One X2.
